Why UPSC Stands Out?

Choosing to pursue the UPSC Civil Services is often less about finding a “job” and more about answering a calling to high-impact leadership. It offers a rare professional intersection where social prestige meets the power to implement systemic change. As a civil servant, you are an architect of the nation’s future, handling diverse portfolios that range from disaster management and law enforcement to crafting developmental policies. Beyond the immense job security and the competitive salary, the true draw is the “authority of effect”—the ability to sign a document that immediately improves the lives of thousands in a district.

What is the pattern of the UPSC CSE Exam?

The exam is conducted in three distinct stages. You must clear one stage to proceed to the next:

  • Stage 1: Preliminary Examination (Objective)
    • Paper I (General Studies): 100 questions, 200 marks. Determines the cutoff for
      the Mains.
    • Paper II (CSAT): 80 questions, 200 marks. Qualifying only (requires 33% or 66.66
      marks).
    • Note: There is a negative marking of 1/3rd (0.66 for GS, 0.83 for CSAT) for every
      wrong answer.
  • Stage 2: Main Examination (Descriptive)
    • Consists of 9 papers in total: 2 Qualifying (Language & English) and 7 Merit-
based papers (Essay, 4 General Studies papers, and 2 Optional papers).
    • Total marks: 1,750.
  • Stage 3: Personality Test (Interview)
    • A face-to-face board interview to assess your personality and suitability for a
      career in public service.
    • Total marks: 275.

Candidates must choose one optional subject for the Mains exam, which consists of two papers (Paper I and Paper II).

  • General / EWS (Economically Weaker Section):
    • Age: 21 to 32 years
    • Attempts: 6
